Cargo Liners are usually used to protect vehicles and everything inside of them in transit. They are also great to protect paint and body when carrying large or sharp items, such as metal sheets and wood logs. When taking your pets somewhere in a vehicle they are also great to prevent damage to upholstery should an accident occur.

Cargo liners can be adapted to suite specific requirements. They are usually made from heavy plastics, rubber or carpeting. Here is an example of a great ready made liner for your Prius

If you would like to make your own, here are hints on how to make it or you can choose a readymade one from the many great ones for the Prius.

Get your tools and supplies ready. Firstly, you should measure the space where you are going to put your cargo liner. At times, creating a template with newspapers can be handy when the shape is odd for using measuring tape. Layout the positioning of the entire area that you want to put a cargo liner in.

  1. Chose the material that is going to work best for what you need to protect. If it is for dirty stuff, you need a material that washes off easily. If it is sharp heavy metal you need something that is not going to cut easily.

If it is heavy you need something that is going to absorb some of the impact. This Prius liner is great for gardening tools and equipment.

If you decide to use carpet for your cargo liner then it is a good idea to also put a thin layer of insulation below it as it makes it even softer and more secure for breakables.

  1. Now you cut out your material to fit the space where you will load your cargo. Always cut an extra 1 inch around. Carpet seaming tape is fantastic for preventing pulling apart at the ends if you are using carpet.
  2. Put the liner down in the car to see if it fits correctly. If it does not, adjust it to fit. Then take it out and cut a slightly smaller mat out of non stick material and put this in below the liner.
  3. Liners for back seats can be made to be removed and replaced with ease. Make them to hang over the neck cushions. Back seat liners don’t have to have added insulation.
